GWU Trade Conference: Is Fairer Trade Compatible with Freer Markets?

Follow
Location: Elliott School of International Affairs 1957 E St., NW, Washington, DC, United States
Summary: Trade agreements and trade policies are controversial
Event Date & Time:
March 4, 2010  | -
March 5, 2010  | -

Description:

Trade agreements and trade policies are controversial. Some people believe that expanded trade has made life worse for the poor. Others contend that the system of rules governing trade has not been fair to the poor.

Whatever their opinion on trade or the WTO system, recent polls reveal that people want global markets to yield fairer outcomes for the world’s neediest citizens.  But fairness has different meanings to different people. This conference, organized by Professors Steven Suranovic and Susan Aaronson of The George Washington University’s Institute for International Economic Policy, will explore how to make trade fairer. By fostering a dialogue about this relationship, we hope to encourage policymakers to adopt strategies that will yield fairer outcomes.

Speakers will include US and foreign government officials, officials from companies such as Nike, Ford, and Campbell’s Soup; and labor and civil society groups.  Questions about the conference can be addressed to Dr. Susan Aaronson, saaronso@gwu.edu or Dr. Steven Suranovic, smsuran@gwu.edu
