The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter provides relief to those affected by disasters and empowers individuals in our community to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. By helping people in the Bay Area learn how to take care of their families and neighbors, we strengthen our community and make it more resilient to disasters large and small.
The Director of Gift Planning is responsible for the development, implementation and marketing of planned gift vehicles as well as cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of planned gifts and management of all aspects of the planned giving program including planning and administration for estates, trusts, annuities, pooled income funds, stock gifts and gifts of insurance.
Responsibilities:-
- Develops a comprehensive program for long term support offering a full range of gift planning opportunities in the areas of estate planning, trusts, annuities, pooled income funds, stock gifts and gifts of insurance;
- Develop and implement strategy to achieve financial goals;
- Manage and solicit an assigned case load of prospects and monitor
- fundraising success toward the planned giving goals as a part of the overall
- campaign and advancement goals;
- Works with prospective donors, their legal and financial advisors and a gift planning committee to increase awareness of and participation in planned giving programs;
- Identifies funding trends and insures gift planning fund raising programs and efforts are in compliance with IRS regulations;
- Oversee the administration and collection of all pending estate distributions;
- With Major Gifts colleagues and the Leadership Volunteers, participate in Chapter’s donor relationship management system;
- Develops, manages and evaluates financial development budgets and prepares and submits reports;
- Serves as a senior member of the development department and works with other development staff to develop a cohesive, coherent fund-raising program for the Chapter;
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Dimensions:-
This position manages the gift planning budget, may supervise a small staff and is responsible for considerable revenue generation.
In addition, as a contributor to the work of an emergency relief organization, extended work hours and/or assignment to a disaster/emergency-specific task will be required.
Qualifications:-
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. Juris Doctorate J.D. and/or CFRE preferred.
- A minimum of five years successful experience in fund raising with a non-profit organization and specialized training in planned giving and estate planning required. The incumbent should have a working knowledge of tax laws that relate to charitable giving and a basic understanding of related charitable computations and their use; knowledge and understanding of investment and financial matters including complex assets and business transactions.
- A minimum of 5 to 7 years of demonstrated success as a front-line fundraiser, with increasing levels of responsibility and success.
- Well-honed skills in developing long-term donor cultivation and solicitation strategies.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills; a high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussions of personal and family finances.
- Superb oral and written communication skills required as well as strong presentation and liaison skills.
- Ability to operate independently and deal effectively and persuasively with volunteers, donors, management and staff, and to work well as part of a team.
- Capacity to deal comfortably and sensitively with high-level donors and community leaders is essential. Must display tact and diplomacy in difficult or sensitive situations.
- Willingness to travel locally and work weekend/evening hours is required.
- Microsoft Office computer skills necessary and Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
