Director of Development
Position Objectives:
The Director of Development is responsible for the day-to-day management of ALDF fundraising programs. He or she will work closely with the Executive Director to craft and execute the strategies needed to meet the organization’s annual and long-term revenue goals. He or she will organize and help to implement the systems, tools, and technology to support fund development activities and fundraising goals.
Description:
- Maximize ALDF’s effectiveness in the areas of high-donor fundraising results, prospect research, and the cultivation and maintenance of relationships with philanthropic organizations, corporations and individuals.
- Collaborate in and develop a work environment that fosters quality teamwork and mutual accountability for high quality performance.
- Oversee the integration of online and offline fundraising communication and results.
- Manage direct mail vendor relationship and coordinate with them to create, package and schedule direct mail fundraising appeals and to generate reports on direct mail activities.
- Manage direct mail cashiering vendor.
- Manage the donor database vendor relationship; maintain development files and tracking.
- Coordinate with the Executive Director on the development of budgets, financial reports to donors and revenue reports.
- Coordinate the Executive Director’s schedule as it relates to high-donor relations and targeted fundraising opportunities.
- Maintain and cultivate high quality relationships with sponsors and donors and facilitate donors’ relationship with the Executive Director, Board and senior staff.
- Work with bookkeeping staff and the Executive Director to prepare reports for the ALDF Board, staff, advisory bodies, and donors.
- Assist in-house Communications Program with the development and packaging of information to market and communicate the impact and value of the work of ALDF to funding sources and other key audiences.
- Manage ALDF donor cultivation events.
- Work with in-house Communications Department, grant writers and consultants to produce, edit and manage written materials related to fund development, including letters of inquiry, concept papers, proposals, gift acknowledgements, stewardship reports, and letters to donors.
- Work with the online Communications staff to design, implement and send online fundraising appeals. Stay abreast of developments and pilot efforts to use Web 2.0 tools (online social networks, user-contributed content, friend-to-friend fundraising) for donor engagement.
- Generate new fundraising vehicles as opportunities arise.
- Strengthen the planned giving program.
- Stay up to date on animal rights issues.
- Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
Qualifications:
- Must have minimum of five years experience working in the field of fundraising/development including management of fundraising campaigns.
- Must have experience working with high-net worth donors and proven track record of successful fundraising solicitations and meeting fundraising campaign goals.
- Must have experience with the management of online fundraising campaigns.
- Must have excellent organizational and prioritization skills and be able to meet deadlines.
- Must have prior experience supervising and engaging a staff. The ability to set and manage realistic work goals for staff along with ability to organize, facilitate and focus a team of professionals is critical.
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with members, supporters, co-workers, etc.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be “computer literate” and have experience with basic software application, including, Outlook, Word, Excel, and internet browsers.
- Must have experience with preparing and managing a budget.
- Must understand and be committed to the mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
- Must have excellent references relevant to similar positions held.
- Must have a positive attitude, be able to work cooperatively with others and function well in a team-oriented work environment.
- Experience using and managing a donor database is strongly preferred.
- Travel required.
Salary and Benefits:
- Salary Range $70,000 – 80,000 DOE. Excellent benefits package. Casual office environment includes companion animals.
