Safety & Environmental Specialist

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Managing Director, the Safety and Environmental Specialist will implement and manage projects for injury prevention improvement, sustainability improvement and compliance of Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department Of Transportation & Environmental Protection Agency regulations. The specialist will lead and inspire others to contribute in a manner that ensures regulatory compliance, including anticipating future situations and needs and developing proactive plans for multiple locations across the US, including California.
Essential Functions:
- Keeps environmental knowledge current to support company and department goals and objectives to ensure Environmental Protection Agency compliance and Occupational Safety & Health Administration compliance.
- Understands, evaluates and monitors environmental laws and regulations as they relate to the company’s operations and updates company compliance programs appropriately to meet changing needs.
- Designs, develops and manages business processes to mitigate safety-related risks including, but not limited to, reducing workplace incidents, accidents and injury frequency and severity. Provides risk analysis and quality improvement management.
- Ensures compliance with items such as hazardous waste disposal and storm water management according to Environmental Protection Agency guidelines and FedEx SmartPost policy.
- Compile and distribute accurate reporting and recordkeeping as required by company policies and government regulations.
- Collaborates with other business units and op-cos to reduce or eliminate exposure to potential fines and penalties due to regulatory compliance issues.
- Research environmental/green government/utility rebates and offerings.
- Conducts audits of all safety and environmental policies and procedures. Monthly involvement on BCSA team to ensure region is in compliance with all corporate policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Hosts and/or participates in meetings and trainings with various audiences via webinar, conference call or live presentation to deliver new information and reinforce existing programs, processes and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science or related discipline required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Certified Safety Professional or Certified Hazardous Materials Management designation is preferred.
Minimum Experience:
Five (5) years of professional experience in safety regulations and environmental compliance is required.
Required Skills - Abilities and/or Licensure:
- Ability to organize, prioritize and execute multiple projects effectively.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
- Ability to research and interpret regulations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively on all levels are required.
- Creative and effective problem solving abilities is required.
- Overnight travel is required.
