Hands On Hartford

Hands On Hartford is many things to many people – a volunteer center and engagement catalyst for greater Hartford, a social service agency that operates a soup kitchen and food pantry, an after school tutorial and recreation program for inner city children, an innovative provider of housing and support services for people with HIV/AIDS.

Our motto and aim is “Caring in Action!” Hands On Hartford is an affiliate of the Hands On Network, an innovative national alliance of organizations committed to reshaping volunteerism and civic engagement in the U.S. and in the world.

HandsOn Hartford’s Volunteer Accelerators-- Hands On Hartford is looking for a dozen energetic, creative and self-propelled individuals to join our AmeriCorps Volunteer Accelerator Team.

The HandsOn AmeriCorps Members will:

1) work to build the volunteer management capacity of local social service programs and agencies

2) develop and train volunteer leaders to spearhead projects aimed at poverty alleviation and recovery

3) design volunteer projects and events aimed at bringing people together to serve The service varies from day to day, offering a mix of management/administrative duties, leadership development/training projects, and hands-on work with people in need…all within the context of a dynamic and supportive team. It’s hard but satisfying work if you’ve got the drive, organizational skills, creativity and commitment…and doing it as a team can make all the difference in the world.

Commitment These positions run September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2011. Members will serve a flexible 40-hour week, including occasional evenings and weekends, in a business-casual setting. AmeriCorps members will be required to complete 1700 or more hours of service over the 12-month period.

Compensation Members will receive a living stipend of about $225 per week, paid bi-weekly. Upon completion of service an educational award of $5,350 will be awarded to full-time members for use at college/graduate school or toward repayment of student loans. Training and mentoring will be provided by Hands On Hartford staff and recognized local trainers. These positions include a basic health care plan (Corps Members only, no dependents), loan forbearance for federal student loans and childcare assistance.

Qualifications Applicants should be college graduates or have completed at least two years of college, be U.S. citizens or resident aliens, and have an interest or experience in volunteering and community development on the local level. Ideal candidates will possess strong organizational skills, a good work ethic, excellent written/oral skills, flexibility, and be a self-motivated team player with a good sense of humor. Members will need to adhere to an established service schedule, meet deadlines, effectively problem solve, keep accurate records, and be familiar with common Microsoft software programs and the internet. Members should also be comfortable serving with a culturally diverse group of volunteers, program participants and colleagues.
