    IMPACT Silver Spring is a non-profit organization located in the heart of downtown Silver Spring. IMPACT brings people together, pooling energy and ideas, to create a community where everyone’s voice is heard and where any one person, regardless of race or class, can make a difference and share civic opportunities and success.

    Position Overview:-

    The Deputy Director is the primary steward of our work in the community. The Deputy Director is responsible for the day to day implementation, management, supervision and evaluation of the organization’s innovative approach to community building and community change in the context of extreme diversity. The Director will support and hold accountable a team of senior program managers, some focused on building diverse networks within specific geographic communities and others focused on building specific capacities within these networks. The Director will also lead and manage the creation of a human resources system and a strategic communications system for the entire organization, working in close partnership with the Executive Director and the Director of Operations and other administrative/program managers. IMPACT seeks a person with strong supervision experience, who is systems oriented, who will ensure high quality initiatives and who is passionate about creating and sustaining thriving multicultural communities.

    This position, new to the organization, is being created in response to our recent growth and our commitment to fulfilling our mission and vision with full accountability to the members of our network, our partners and the community at large.

    Duties and Responsibilities:-

    As the steward of our work in the community, the Deputy Director will have three primary areas of responsibility: Program Management, Human Resources Strategic Management and Strategic Communications.

    Program Management:

    • Initiate and lead a robust and thorough approach to action research, program/project planning, documentation and evaluation.
    • Recruit, hire, train, support, hold accountable and retain a committed staff of community builders, project coordinators and capacity program managers. (See organizational chart attached).
    • Fully implement programs, strategies and projects according to annual strategic plan and in partnership with program and administrative staff.
    • Initiate and lead a highly functioning system of coordination and collaboration between geographic program focus and capacity program functions (see note about above organizational structure).
    • Initiate and lead a highly functioning system of coordination and collaboration between programs and all administrative functions: resource development, finance, technology, facilities and general office support.
    • Support and hold accountable all program staff in developing increased skills in the area of program administration, with emphasis on human resources and financial management.
    • Maintain and lead organization’s commitment to rigorous research of cutting edge practices and theories in the field of community building.

    Human Resources Strategic Management:

    • Initiate a strategic workforce planning effort to assess success and gaps in our approach and create an action plan for improved clarification of jobs and roles throughout the organization.
    • Lead and support on-going staff recruitment, selection, orientation and training – organization-wide - that reflects our core beliefs and leads to achievement of our expected outcomes.
    • Create a new, organization-wide system for work plans, professional development and performance reviews linked to goals and objectives specified in the annual strategic plan
    • Help implement a newly emerging team and shared decision making structure, with special emphasis on creating a system for group performance review and reflection.

    Strategic Communications:

    • Lead, in partnership with Executive Director and Resource Development Director and other key staff, the creation of an annual communications plan, with key messages and branding
    • Fully integrate communications planning into program development (social marketing and use of social networks)
    • Develop and assign primary communication strategies to appropriate staff and teams.
    • Support and holding accountable entire organization for achieving plan, including Board and Executive Director (evaluation of communications plan)

    Basic Salary and Benefits:-

    • Salary: $70,000-80,000 (depending on qualifications and experience) including paid vacations and holidays.
    • Leave policy including sick and personal days.

    • Significant experience working with and managing diverse persons/peers in a community context.
    • Demonstrated personal experience with a self-growth process which led to increased personal power, leadership capacity and skills.
    • Demonstrated experience in group facilitation and small group formation.
    • Excellent listener and communicator, warm personality and capable of engaging different personalities in a variety of settings.
    • Demonstrated ability to take risks and pursue goals in a proactive spirit, combined with experience managing programs and people.
    • Belief in philosophy that power is infinite and practices this belief in daily life.

    Other Important Attributes:

    • Willingness to undertake a demanding and flexible work schedule.
    • Demonstrated understanding of individual and institutionalized racism and oppression.
    • Demonstrated openness towards people from different backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on diverse socioeconomic and ethnic/racial backgrounds.
    • Works from a place of imagination and curiosity; committed to constant learning.
    • Organized and detail-conscious, with ability to plan ahead with teams, document work and follow through on commitments.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Graduate degree in a related field: education, community development/planning, international affairs, social work, nonprofit management.
    • Knowledge of Silver Spring or a similar diverse, suburban community.
    • Bilingual in English, Spanish, Amharic, French or Vietnamese.
    • Experience with fundraising and general resource development in a nonprofit setting.
