ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, DEVELOPMENT
Opera San Jose, now in its 26th Season, is a professional regional opera company that is unique in the United States. Maintaining a resident company of principal artists, Opera San José specializes in showcasing the finest young professional singers in the nation, performing at the historic California Theatre in downtown San Jose.
The Associate Director, Development works in conjunction with senior executives and the Board of Trustees, and is responsible for individual, corporate, and institutional fundraising. The candidate works with the Board of Directors and other sources to identify, cultivate, solicit, and build a portfolio grantors and major donors.
Responsibilities:
- Understands performing arts, and works to identify opportunities for fundraising
- Meets or exceeds annual fundraising goal of $2 million
- Works with existing grantors and donors, and brings in new funding sources
- Works through the grant process: application, award, acknowledgement, and report
- Follows up on sponsorship benefits
- Works within annual giving cycle
- Identifies in-kind gifts; results and reporting
- Analyzes database; data-mining, targeting for direct appeal
- Manages two annual direct appeal campaigns
- Develops Major Gift targets for the Board of Trustees
- Manages Planned Giving and Endowment events and communications
- Organizes and supervises Auxiliary fundraising activities
- Creates corporate packages that include event, education, or production sponsorship, group sales, and communications
- Determines with management, individual donor benefits, and fulfills those benefits, including events, private tours, lunches and dinners
- Meets with institutional grantors, including the City of San Jose
- Meets with regional arts and cultural development officers
- Attends meetings and workshops on philanthropy
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Proven development record in a non-profit performing arts setting
- Experience in corporate fundraising desired
- Knowledge of the San José/Silicon Valley business market
- National fundraising experience desired
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel; knowledge of cyber-grant software
Duties:
- Manage corporate and institutional grants, individual giving
- Network with senior executives, the Board, and volunteers to make contacts
- Make persuasive presentations to prospective donors; fulfill donor benefits
- Utilize contacts to acquire in-kind goods and services
- Work independently; take initiative
- Handle sensitive communications; adhere to confidentiality
- Communicate effectively and efficiently; sponsor documentation
- Work on several projects simultaneously
- Maintain professionalism in all interactions
The Associate Director, Development works under the guidance of the Senior Director of Marketing and Development, with a team that includes a part-time institutional grant-writing associate, a part-time database associate, and a part-time development assistant.
This is a full time, exempt position with a benefits package. In addition to office hours, the candidate will be required to work at evening and weekend performances at the theatre during four productions a year, as well the annual benefit, annual vocal competition, and other donor events.
