BACKGROUND:  Founded in 2001 by Aaron Hurst, the Taproot Foundation (Taproot) is the largest not-for-profit consulting firm in the country, and was created to connect this country’s millions of business professionals with not-for-profit organizations who need their talents and experience.  Historically, pro bono work has been an unreliable source of support for the not-for-profit sector. Taproot has solved this problem by creating the structure necessary to consistently deliver high-quality pro bono work in volume.

Unlike traditional foundations that make cash grants, Taproot makes grants of high-quality professional consulting services, called Service Grants, which provide high-potential not-for-profit organizations with the tools and services necessary to maximize the impact of their critical work in communities. Service Grants are executed by teams of professionals who volunteer their time and expertise. Each year, hundreds of not-for-profit organizations rely on Taproot’s award-winning program to provide millions of dollars worth of pro bono marketing, HR, IT, and strategic management consulting services.

Taproot’s Eastern-Central Region covers territory east of the Mississippi.  Currently, the Eastern-Central Region includes Chicago, New York City, and Washington, DC. Taproot, particularly in New York City, is at a unique and critical moment in its history and requires the leadership and inventiveness of the philanthropic community.

Taproot is funded by over 80 family, community and corporate foundations. For FY 2009, Taproot has an operating budget of $3.6 million. The budget for the region is $1.3 million.  Expectations for 2009-10 are to vastly increase our regional funding by a factor of thirty percent or greater.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  A newly-created position, the Director of Development, Eastern-Central Region reports to the regional Executive Director, and works closely with the President & Founder. The Director will manage current philanthropic and strategic relationships and develop new relationships within the philanthropic community to support Taproot’s ongoing operations and the expansion of services. The Director of Development will be supported by a research and grant-writing team in New York and Chicago.

Qualifications:  Passion for the Taproot mission; advanced degree preferred; credibility in the region and in the grant-making community; significant achievement in a development leadership role; knowledge of institutional advancement and corporate and foundation relationship management; sustained history of involvement in the not-for-profit sector; successful high-level grant-seeking or grant-making experience; proven track record developing, cultivating, soliciting and closing large gifts ($50K+); ideally, leadership experience in an organization with a social focus; demonstrated ability to motivate a team of professionals; ability to think strategically and translate that thinking into targeted goals and actions; savvy about the field of capacity-building; intellectual curiosity; superior written, verbal and interpersonal skills; high energy; knowledgeable about NYC (and ideally, DC) corporate and foundation community; ability to interact with staff at all levels and forge collaborations with program team; self-motivated and goal-driven; entrepreneurial spirit; nimble, creative and flexible; superior organizational, time-management and follow-up skills, direct experience working with volunteers; commitment to travel regionally on behalf of Taproot.

Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
