Job Status: Mid Level Description
Education: What if we really could kick our dependence on oil – not just foreign oil – and make the shift to clean, renewable energy?
What if the health care you receive had everything to do with your health and nothing to do with your bank account? What if they held an election and everyone came? Sound like a challenge? Of course it does. Society doesn’t change overnight. But when someone – or more to the point, lots of someones – speak up and take action, change can happen. If you want a job where you can work to solve problems each day, consider a job with U.S. PIRG (Public Interest Research Group). U.S. PIRG is a federation of nonprofit groups, based in states across the country, and we tackle issues ranging from the environment to energy to health care reform and more. The goal of a PIRG Fellowship is to help develop leaders for the public interest movement. As a PIRG Fellow, you gain hands-on experience in organizing, advocating and leading public interest campaigns in your first two years on staff. More importantly, you get real results, whether at the local, state or federal level. And your experience is complemented by intensive training and the direction and advice of a senior mentor. As a Fellow, you are placed in a position working on energy efficiency, consumer protection, health care, campaign reform, or another social problem. You conduct research, make the case for solutions, act as a spokesperson to the media, build diverse coalitions, write grants, and develop the kind of politically powerful support you need to win. Qualifications: We’re looking for motivated individuals with a strong commitment to the public interest. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in leadership roles and an excellent academic background with outstanding verbal and writing skills. Hiring preference is given to candidates who are willing to relocate. The state PIRGs are currently active in 47 states and Washington, DC. Most of all, we look for smart people who want to work hard to make a difference. Salary & Benefits: College graduates earn $23,750 in their first year on staff. In addition, full-time staff can opt into our state health care coverage, are eligible for paid sick and vacation days, and can apply for our college loan assistance program. Our staff accrues two weeks of vacation by the end of their first year and three weeks by the end of their second year. Staff is also eligible to join our 401(k) program in their second year. The state PIRGs’ staff training combines classroom study with hands-on field work. How to Apply: Please submit your cover letter and resume, click below "Apply Now" button.
