On August 1, humanity will have used nature's resource budget for the entire year, according to Global Footprint Network, an international research organization. This date is called Earth Overshoot Day - the date when humanity's annual demand on nature exceeds what Earth's ecosystems can renew in that year. Earth Overshoot day is the earliest since 70’s, but there are alternatives to bring it back to track.

Global Footprint Network calculates Earth Overshoot Day every year using Ecological Footprint accounting, which adds up all of people's competing demands on nature, including demand for food, timber, and fibers (cotton); absorption of carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels; and buildings, roads and other infrastructure.

The Earth’s resources are finite, but human possibilities are not. Continuing to operate in this reality requires BOLD IDEAS, and leading companies are rising to the challenge by looking at how to manage natural resources differently, how to measure them more accurately, and how to develop products and processes that use them more efficiently. Schneider Electric estimates that commercial technologies for buildings, industrial processes and electricity production alone could move the date at least 21 days
