The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation and Restore America’s Estuaries Explore the Carbon-Capturing Power of Wetlands

Since 2016 ScottsMiracle-Gro has partnered with Restore America’s Estuaries (RAE) and its members to advance the cause of coastal restoration in some of our country’s most fragile watersheds. Pictured above is ongoing work being done by RAE member groups Galveston Bay Foundation and Tampa Bay Watch. Wetlands being restored in Texas and Florida, as well as many other places, not only filter nutrients and buffer shorelines, but also trap carbon dioxide—a process known as Blue Carbon.
Stefanie Simpson, Blue Carbon Program Senior Manager for RAE, recently wrote an article for the Foundation’s blog explaining what Blue Carbon is and why it matters. In addition to their contributions to water quality and wildlife habitats, wetlands can trap and store carbon in the ground for long periods of time. This often overlooked benefit offers new incentives for preserving wetlands and the opportunity to bring new sets of stakeholders to the table.
