Aissatou (Aicha) Diallo’s goal is to institute
fundamental change in gender roles and
access to education in her country of
origin—Guinea—and its surrounding areas.
Her long-term goals of achieving this involve
working with organizations and governments to
ensure a more universal recognition of young
women’s’ right to an education and full participation in society. Her
professional and philosophical development has been furthered by
the experiential component of the Catherine B. Reynolds Program.
Born in Guinea, Aissatou has seen first-hand the struggles facing
young women in Africa. When she was nine, her family fled to Sierra
Leone where she and her siblings could continue their education.
Seven years later, the family moved back to Liberia when rebels
took over Sierra Leone’s capital city of Freetown. It was there that
Aissatou completed high school and then moved to Guinea where she
completed High School.
In high school, Aissatou realized that the fact that she could attend
school made her an exception among the young women in the
country.
To reach out to others, she interned at Women in Action for Goodwill,
a local non-governmental organization dedicated to helping women
and girls most affected by the Liberian civil war. Here, she coauthored
the blueprint for recruiting, organizing and educating at risk
teenagers.
Since then, Aissatou received her B.S. in Business Administration
at the University of Ghana, Legon, where she was able to put her
leadership skills to use again
