Alex P. Mavro
Born in USA 1947; married to Nid; one daughter in college in Bangkok.
Father in U.S. Foreign Service. Beginning in 1955, Alex attended schools in Vietnam, Cambodia, and then Thailand, graduating from the International School of Bangkok in 1964. Worked in Vientiane, Laos, for one year...
From 1966 through 1970 attended University of Florida under U.S. Air Force scholarship (Political Science; Asian Studies). Served as charter President of the university's Chinese Language Society and as board member of the Air Force cadet honorary fraternity, the Arnold Air Society.
From 1970 to 1977 served as U.S. Air Force Intelligence Officer based in various upcountry Thailand cities. Left the Air Force as a Captain, remaining in Thailand.
From 1977 to 1985, after a brief and hungry stint as a freelance writer, became Operations Manager of McFadden's Protective Agency (MPA) in Bangkok, a private U.S. company offering custom physical security systems to businesses and residences.
In 1985, accepted a long-standing invitation to join Griffin Associates, the original Thailand agent for DHL International, as a partner and Marketing Director.
In 1990, when DHL set up its own operation in Thailand, became co-owner of GDM (named after the founding owners' names: Griffin - Daly - Mavro), the country's largest independent international courier company. Through a network of service partners, GDM served most international destinations.
Beninning in 1997, GDM suffered in the business downturn that affected all of Asia. As a consequence...
In 2002 GDM partners agreed to a deal wherein TNT obtained the GDM client base and key employees, including Alex. Alex became Corporate Social Responsibility Manager for TNT Thailand.
In 2006, upon completion of contract, Alex established Social Impact Ventures Asia, a dedicated sustainability and social impact consultancy.
