Annie Myers is concentrating in Agricultural Economics and Politics, with a particular focus
on family farming, sustainable food systems, and
international trade. Annie participates in projects
working to establish a fair and just international
trade policy that support strong domestic
sustainable agriculture. She works to spread
awareness of and support for sustainable economic models that support
small family farms around the globe.
After working on an organic farm in Umbria, Italy, during the fall of 2004,
Annie spent three months teaching English in the capital of El Salvador,
at the Mélida Anaya Montes English School. She then lived in El Salvador
just prior to the enactment of CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade
Agreement. Annie came to see and understand the harmful impact of
US trade practices that imposed tariffs and trade barriers for import and
exports for both American and Salvadoran agricultural sectors.
With knowledge of the US trade policy, Annie entered NYU with a passion
to learn and spread awareness about the policy’s vast effect upon current
global agricultural economy and practices, and to support through
action what she considers the immense value of small-scale agricultural
production.
Annie began NYU in Journalism, before transferring to the Gallatin School
in her sophomore year. She wrote for Bullpen, NYU’s Journalism webzine,
contributed to the Washington Square News, and started working on the
WNYU Radio News Show “Earshot” of which she is now a co-host. She
began volunteer work with the Committee in Solidarity with the People
of El Salvador (CISPES), and coordinated regularly with Oxfam at NYU to
organize consciousness-raising events for the NYU community. In the
spring of 2006, Annie published an essay entitled “Salvadoran Voices:
Left Handwritten” in Humanus, NYU’s Human Rights Journal.
Recently, Annie has begun to focus more on the local importance of her
interests. She started volunteering for the non-profit organization, Just
Food, as a History Interns studying Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA). Coinciding with her work with Just Food, Annie has aired Earshot,
a series of radio programs addressing Local Food, the Farm Bill, Fast
Track, and Free Trade. She continues to volunteer with CISPES and has
recently assisted in organizing a “Teach-In on Trade” at NYU.
