Autumn Terrill is devoted to ‘creating spaces’ that enable people who have disabilities to
illustrate their capacity to learn and make
meaningful and valuable contributions to their
communities, families and most importantly
themselves.
While attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in
1996, Autumn and her sister began a two-part project, “GORK!” a
documentary film and one-woman stage play designed to challenge
and reshape perceptions of people who have disabilities. Both pieces
present a “warts-and-all” picture of their 7-member family as ruled
by their adopted brother Adam; an exuberant, articulate, spunkylittle-
spitfire with a love for punch lines and flag-twirling. Adam is
also a person with multiple disabilities, including autism.
Autumn worked for 5 years at the Institute for Applied Behavior
Analysis in Los Angeles, which provides support services for people
with disabilities. As a sibling and a professional in the field, Autumn
began to question accepted treatment methods, teaching modalities
and models of long-term care.
In 2004, Autumn performed her one-woman show in New York
City’s International Fringe Festival where “GORK!” the stage play
was warmly received winning, “Best Solo Show.” “GORK!” the
documentary is nearing completion.
In March 2004, inspired by the way in which her brother relates to
the world, Autumn created an alternative approach to language and
learning aptly named, Storytime with A.D.A.M. (Adaptive Dramatic
Affect Method). Storytime is a 1.5 hour, high-energy, creative
play session, designed for children (5-up)
