About Cecilia:	My name is Cecilia and since I was very young I grew up in a family environment where honesty, respect, justice and self respect where the main values. My father and mother studied at San Marcos University in the seventy’s and they, specially my father, were activists against injustice, discrimination and the violation of human rights, but at the same time they believed respecting private property.. My father is an entrepreneur. He always taught me that a person has to have equilibrium between his material side and his spiritual side; and that a person can be successful in life by treating people fairly and without doing harm to anyone. He always used to tell me that by doing things in this way, one always gets happiness in life. He is now a very successful man, he has 3 companies; and I know all his employees, who have been working for him for many years and they are faithful to him, even in hard times, they have always supported him. I also inherited his love for reading; so, aside of the books I had to read because of my industrial engineering career, I also read books by Herman Hesse, Og Mandino, Brian L. Weiss, and lately Paulo Coelho. That is why when I finished my undergraduate course, I decided to develop my thesis on how to make a successful business by promoting better working conditions for workers. For this reason, I contacted Baltazar Caravedo, who introduced me to the CSR world. He started the literature of CSR in Peru, and since then I have been working in this field. During my work experience of nearly eight years, I have been involved continuously in the coordination of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects as well as in researching and training in CSR issues. I would like to point out two experiences, one in the private sector and one in the non governmental sector. As a Community Relations Officer for the Liquefied Natural Gas Exporting Project, I was able to experience the challenges a company faces to develop good relations with communities. This was mainly because both sides, the company and the community, speak not only different languages but different communicational codes, which are the result of the different social and cultural backgrounds where they have grown. Another important barrier to make these relations work is that both sides are always suspicious of each other. But as I have learned, an honest and transparent communication, although it can bring some conflicts at the beginning, is always the best choice. I understood that the only way to gain the trust of people is to demonstrate to them that we are truthful. My best experience in the non governmental sector was in the project “Peru to the World”, where I coordinated the planning and developing of "The Programme of Implementation of Good Agricultural Practices and Principles of Social Responsibility in the Exporting Agricultural Sector”. In this programme I was involved in the revision and evaluation of many international social standards, codes of conduct and also the Peruvian legislation, with the objective to develop training material to train and help agricultural companies in implementing suitable CSR principles for the reality of the Peruvian agricultural sector. Furthermore, because “Peru to the world” had a multistakeholder committee conformed by private, public and trade organisations; I had to develop reports periodically, informing them of the progress of the project as well as future objectives. It is important to point out the importance of this private-public network to the success of this program due to the different opinions and approaches that produced a very productive synergy to the application of CSR aspects in Peruvian exporting companies. Because of my experience in the CSR field, in both areas, the private sector and non governmental sector, I have been awarded seven scholarships to participate in different programmes in CSR in America, Latin America and Europe. Thanks to this, I have now a better understanding of the business field, how it works and how to link the search for business competitiveness with socially responsible strategies. However, I know I have a long way to go through, many new things to learn and many challenges to face, and I just wish to have the opportunity to get more skills in order to do a better job in CSR in my country. Thus, to contribute in having a country with social justice, without discrimination and equal opportunities for everybody.
