Dominique’s ideal career is one that combines
her interests in research, analysis and problem-solving with her goal of realizing positive
institutional change affecting for underserved
and underrepresented communities. As a child
raised in a two-parent household that valued
education, family and personal responsibility,
Dominique witnessed firsthand the inequalities experienced by her
less fortunate peers living in hardship. This began her passion to use
her comparative good fortune to help those without the same access to
resources and opportunities that she enjoyed.
Throughout her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, Dominique
devoted much of her time to activities that enhanced the social and
academic experience for students of color. She became the director of
the Black Recruitment and Retention Center, peer tutor, and president
of a public service sorority. Since graduating, she has engaged in
policy research for the Los Angeles Universal Preschool initiative and
participated in the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs.
Dominique recently served as Program Director for Experience
Berkeley, a nonprofit community service agency providing collegepreparatory
services focused on increasing the numbers of highly
qualified underrepresented students at UC Berkeley. Experience
Berkeley was created in response to the enactment of California
Proposition 209 which prohibited the University from having access
to race, sex or ethnicity data during the recruitment and application
process. Berkeley saw a drastic decline in the enrollment rate of
African-American students on campus inducing Experience Berkeley
to run an intensive program for high school seniors with student
panels, faculty and alumni workshops and academic planning and
financial aid sessions. Dominique oversaw the program’s recruitment
and selection process, managed logistics and staff, partnered with
campus leadership and spearheaded fundraising efforts. After two
years, over 50 percent of Experience Berkeley participants were
admitted to UC Berkeley for Fall 2007 and the program is currently
expanding to include Chicano/Latino and Native American students.
Dominique is currently pursuing approaches to grow the program
to include greater numbers of underrepresented students at public
colleges and universities across the nation.
