I am a mother-of-two and a writer. I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, during the Civil Rights Movement, but have lived in New York, Puerto Rico, New Mexico, California and Washington. I am interested in immigration issues, race and identity, bilingualism and prison education.
Three months ago, I began volunteering as a writing mentor for the PEN Prison Writing Program. I am corresponding with William Van Poyck, who is on death row in Virginia. He writes a blog at

Now that I've accomplished my first JustMeans wish, I have another -- organize a program for donating books to prison libraries.

What kind of positive change do you want to create in the world over the next 12 months?:
I want to create a national program for donating books to prison libraries.
