Erica Beth Pollack is interested in a career
dedicated to public health and preventive medicine.
Erica’s commitment to public health stems
from her involvement in drug policy reform.
As a student at Amherst College, she helped lead
the local chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), a youth
organization that promotes an open discussion on the nation’s drug
problem and alternatives to the War on Drugs. Erica contributed to
SSDP programs that ranged from informational sessions on drugs and
drug use for the college community, to seminars discussing how U.S.
drug policy impacts the rest of the world, especially Latin America.
Erica was awarded the Amherst College Johnson Fellowship, which
helped support her during two years of living in Central and South
America. There she learned Spanish and continued to study the
social impact of drug policy through her work with the Drug Reform
Coordination Network based in Washington, D.C., RELARD (Latin
America Harm Reduction Network), and ARDA (Argentinean Harm
Reduction Association). She graduated from Amherst in 2002 with a
double major in Fine Art and Neuroscience.
As a medical student at NYU, Erica participates in the Primary Care
and Public Health (PCPH) Scholars Program. This program provides
the mentorship and research tools necessary to complete an original
project in the field of public health over the four-year course of
medical school. With the support of the PCPH program, Erica is
conducting an evaluation of school-based drug education programs
and hopes to contribute to the development of a standardized
curriculum.
Erica’s research reflects her ongoing interest in drug policy and
education. At the School of Medicine, Erica helped coordinate several
harm reduction-related programs. For example, the Hepatitis Project
is a group of student volunteers that provide hepatitis vaccinations
and counseling services to participants of the needle exchange
program at the Lower East Side Harm Reduction Center. Streetwork
organizes groups of medical students to provide vaccinations and
counseling regarding sexually-transmitted diseases to homeless
youth. Erica also co-directed the Harm Reduction Alliance, which
aims to raise medical students’ awareness of harm-reduction
strategies as they pertain to providing healthcare to the drug-using
population.
