Ismael E. Cruz-Cordova is majoring in Drama and minoring in Producing and Applied Theatre.
He believes art to be a powerful vehicle to effect
social change. He is particularly interested in
bringing visual and performing arts to lowincome
communities, utilizing it as a medium for
empowerment and a voice for political discourse.
Ismael found art worked well to address social issues at the age of seven
when he wrote his first poem concerning the dangers of large scale
construction negatively impacting the neighborhood environment.
Coming from a low-income, uneducated family, he quickly became
aware of the repressed cycle affecting the under educated who were
continuously excluded from exercising a strong political voice needed
to impact positive change in their lives. Since then he has sought
to incorporate education into the arts to provide the community a
broadened awareness of their role as citizens and their right to speak out.
Throughout his education, Ismael has worked to develop programs that
integrate art and activism in the classroom setting and to under privileged
communities. During his senior year of high school, Ismael developed a
program called ‘Arte para Expresar’ (Art to Express), in which high school
students competed with their work in theatre, film, poetry, spoken word,
paint, graffiti, photography, and mixed media. The program’s success
was in bringing art to an audience not normally exposed to it. This type of
dialogue has inspired Ismael to expand his vision and transform it into
a televised forum called ‘Familia,’ in which both formally educated and
non-educated artists have a space to present and discuss their works with
each other. ‘Familia’ also provided a forum in which artists working to
increase community empowerment and realize social change are able to
demonstrate the power of art as a vehicle for change.
