Joseph Shin is dedicated to improving the
health of under-served communities through innovative partnerships in healthcare and
health-professional education. He hopes to
use his experiences in public affairs, policy
and medicine to encourage knowledge and
resource sharing between medical centers in
the global North and South, develop sustainable funding strategies for
healthcare in resource-poor countries, and encourage the growth of
robust public health systems to ensure universal access to quality care.
Originally from Morton Grove, Illinois, Joseph graduated from the
University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 2002 with a B.S. in Biology
and a minor in History.
During his time at UIC, Joseph worked on designing more
equitable delivery systems for health and other social services both
domestically and abroad. In 2001, he conducted research on social
service delivery in the context of massive public housing reforms in
Chicago and London through the UIC College of Urban Planning and
Public Affairs and IES London. He was also recognized by the Honors
College for his work designing and promoting service-based learning
programs as president of Alternative Spring Break, and for expanding
funding for such programs as Chair of the Student Activities Funding
Committee and member of the Student Fee and Tuition Advisory
Committee. In addition to his service to the community, he received
honors for his research on molecular mechanisms of neuron damage
in multiple sclerosis.
In 2002, Joseph was a Coro Fellow at the Coro Center for Civic
Leadership in Pittsburgh, PA, working with local business, labor
unions, foundations, non-profits and several elected officials on
improving health care access in the region. In 2003, he went on to
work as a program associate for Physicians for a National Health
Program, conducting policy research and designing advocacy training
curriculum for physicians and other health professionals.
