Being the last of six children, I never struggled for attention while growing up, but I had to learn the skill or maintaining such attention and making it worth the while of my "audience". As a result, I quickly learnt that excellence and hard work yielded the desired effects, and that to create space for myself in a competitive family environment meant setting myself apart and working towards seemingly unusual goals (i.e. starting to read South American literature when the focus at home was on Mills&Boons and African Resistance literature). Furthermore, givnen our family size and having a single parent, it was further apparent that being resourceful and creative about what was available was essential. So learning how to make very little go really far became a natural part of life. It is these values and approaches to life that have guided me throughout my school and work career, as well as a strong desire to remember always that I am a part of a bigger whole and that my efforts matter at an individual but also at a group level; that the wellbeing of others around me is as much in my own interests as any pursuit towards my own wellbeing and interests. Thus, working as part of a team is as much an opportunity to learn, grow, and share, as it is an opportunity to make a bigger impact in the world than what I could do on my own.

What kind of positive change do you want to create in the world over the next 12 months?:
a year is perhaps not enough time within which to effect much change - positive or negative. The question then is: how long does one need to effect the kind of changes that one envisages for a better world? The starting point, however, is a realisation that change is cumulative, that it builds momentum on the basis of small encounters and experiences. The kind of change that I would want to create in the world can thus not be measured in predertemined chunks of time. Rather, it is an accumulation of what I have done, what I am doing now, and what I will be doing in the future (short- to long-term). Building on the values of social justice, integrity, honesty. and critical resistance where necessary, I hope to see greater momentun and scope towards the political and socio-economic goals of Africa and the global South more generally, as well as making space for youth engagement through the Student Network that I helped set up with some colleagues.
