Paul B. Thompson is the Executive Director of BetterWorld Together Foundation, an international philanthropic organization based in Temecula, California. BetterWorld works to fulfill its vision of a world where everyone accepts responsibility for themselves and the planet, where families are nourished and nurtured – and where all people are working toward, and looking forward to, a bright and healthy future together.
Prior to joining BetterWorld, Paul was Principal and Senior Partner in the social investment and change management firm of Global Community Solutions, Inc. (GCS), a firm dedicated to building the corporate citizenship capacity of businesses and effectiveness of domestic and international “social profit” (nonprofit) organizations. His work included several long-term assignments for clients such as BetterWorld Together Foundation and The San Diego Foundation where he developed and implemented several programs designed to help build the capacity of the “social profit” sector in the San Diego region.
Prior to forming GCS, Paul worked for Callaway Golf, the world’s largest publicly traded golf manufacturer, as the Executive Director of The Callaway Golf Company Foundation and Office of Global Community Affairs. In these roles, Mr. Thompson managed the Company's corporate & charitable philanthropy efforts, as directed through the Callaway Golf Company; it’s Foundation, and foreign subsidiaries. The Callaway Golf Company Foundation is a private 501(c)(3) charitable foundation that was founded in 1993.
Prior to joining Callaway Golf, Mr. Thompson was president and CEO of Project Concern International, a San Diego-based international health organization operating with 540 full-time employees in 12 countries across five continents. His 30-year career in philanthropy and nonprofit leadership also includes work experience with some of the world's most significant international humanitarian organizations, including World Vision, MAP International and Project Concern International; he has spent most of the last 30 years actively engaged in the Global Humanitarian arena.
Mr. Thompson has traveled to more than 110 countries around the world during his career. He had the good fortune to participate in some of the early training sessions on the use of “Appreciative Inquiry” (AI) as a tool for implementing and managing organizational change. He was a participant in the first Appreciative Inquiry (AI) training session launched by the widely acclaimed Global Excellence in Management Initiative (GEM Initiative), underwritten by the US Agency for International Development. He has personally utilized AI to launch the organizational transformation and change management efforts of several international and domestic social profit/nonprofit organizations. He is currently utilizing AI as part of a grassroots citizen’s movement in his hometown of Carlsbad, CA. The initiative is called “Imagine Carlsbad” has the objective of actively planning and creating the best possible future for the citizens of Carlsbad in one of the most livable cities in the United States.
He has served as an active member on the Board of Directors of San Diego Grantmakers; the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and the San Diego Better Business Bureau and its Foundation. Mr. Thompson is currently Immediate Past Chairman of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for the calendar year of 2008. He is also currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation in his home town of Carlsbad, California.
Mr. Thompson taught for six years as an adjunct faculty member of the UCSD Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies where he also served as a faculty advisor to the student run management-consulting group. He has also served as an adjunct Faculty member for the George Fox University Graduate School of Business in Portland Oregon, where he taught the Transformational Leadership course to graduating MBA students. The course was taught in Curritiba, Brazil.
Mr. Thompson served for five years as chair of the Ethical Standards Committee for the American Council of Voluntary International Action (InterAction), the U.S. trade association for international humanitarian organizations working in disaster relief and sustainable development programs around the world.
Mr. Thompson received a bachelor's degree in sociology, with minors in Political Science and Social Work from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned a master's degree in Management from Pepperdine University in 1977. He has completed postgraduate course-work in Management, Strategic Planning, and Risk Assessment at USC, UCLA and the Wharton School of Business.
Paul and his wife Konny and their four children reside in and actively enjoy the city of Carlsbad, California.
