Tylea’s goal is to develop effective approaches and related infrastructures for the socially
responsible apparel movement by directly
supporting producers of wearable merchandise
in the United States and abroad. She will
work to develop a better business, financial,
and creative framework to help small sewing
cooperatives, union factories, and other independent manufacturing
projects compete on a global scale.
Tylea comes to New York University with a background in youth
development, non-profit management, and labor organizing. Most
recently, Tylea worked in Nicaragua at the Nueva Vida Women’s
Sewing Cooperative (COMAMNUVI). The only worker-owned factory
designated a Free Trade Zone that produces organic clothing, the
factory is a groundbreaking model for people-centered globalization.
There, Tylea experienced first-hand the daily challenges that threaten
the project’s viability including lack of financing and the inability to
effectively market to consumers in the US and Europe.
In response to these challenges, Tylea co-founded the Nicaraguan
Garment Workers Fund. This organization continues to work on
issues of financing, marketing, and distribution of sweatshop-free
clothing. She plans to expand these services to other manufacturers
around the world including those operating in Indonesia, Cambodia,
South Africa, Mexico, Argentina, and the US.
Tylea believes that activists and workers have a unique opportunity to
respond to the expanding market for sweatshop-free and Fair Trade
products, and create real wealth for producer communities. Her aim
is to ensure that trend-savvy, socially responsible apparel can be
delivered in an affordable and timely manner that will maximize profits
for co-operatively owned manufactures, as this is the most effective
means to ensuring these artisans, craftspeople, and machine operators
are receiving adequate return from their own labor and innovations.
