08/04/09- Employee & Citizen Engagement
Timberland's Quarterly Dialogue in August 2009 featured CEO Jeff Swartz and Changents President Deron Driff (www.changents.com). These leaders discussed strategies for building an Earthkeeper movement - including employee engagement tactics and using web 2.0 tools to connect and empower consumers to live more sustainably. The speakers also dialogued with stakeholder participants, including lead-off questions from Bob Ferris (Center for a New American Dream) and Lisa Drake (Stonyfield Yogurt).

Beth,
Check out the efforts of Roz Savage at http://www.rozsavage.com . Her story is inspirational. She focuses on ocean conservation efforts while rowing AROUND THE WORLD. Her story may connect with kids. She also engages in public speaking with youth. She believes anyone can make a difference.

We love the idea of incorporating Kids into our Earthkeeper movement. In fact, we're in the process of building a new strategy especially designed to engage kids because the next generation can help teach the current generation to live more sustainably - and when those kids grow up, we hope they'll make more sustainability-conscious decisions too. Our Earthkeeper Heroes are also focused on working with youth in order to educate and empower - check out Christopher Swain's current work at http://bit.ly/190a8p .
If anyone has any ideas/ tactics for reaching kids in a credible way that drives sustainable values, post your comments here!

Would be awfully cute to run a "Kids are Earthkeepers, too" campaign. Schools, churches, synagogues and other groups are doing a lot to help kids understand how they can help clean up their neighborhoods, and how important it is to take care of the Earth. If it were well-executed, this could be a touching and inspiring way for Timberland to reach out to both parents and youth. Besides, just look what children can do for a worthy message (Horizon Organic): http://www.horizonorganic.com/

We're excited to see people here listening to the podcast so we can continue the dialogue after the call. Post your comment here or on the event page at: http://www.justmeans.com/events/timberl and/426.html
Here's a question to kick off the online discussion:
How can we activate the largest possible Earthkeeping community and inspire people to participate?

Thanks for a great article Christine and David! We hope you will also help us continue the dialogue at http://bit.ly/x1xeV .
We'd love to hear your thoughts about how we can build a greater Earthkeeping movement - do you have any ideas or examples that weren't mentioned on the call?

Christine Arena and David Connor, two Justmeans contributors, participated in this call and were really impressed by Timberland's environmental leadership and stakeholder engagement tactics. We decided to co-author an article, "At Timberland, Candor Moves The Dial," which has just been published on three websites, Global Post, Fast Company and Apesphere.
