At Work for the Planet: Domtar, Student Conservation Association Join Forces for Habitat Restoration at Lasalle’s Parc Des Rapides
MONTREAL, October 11, 2012 /3BL Media/ – Domtar Corporation (NYSE: UFS) (TSX: UFS) today announced that on Saturday, October 13th, more than 50 employee volunteers and their families from the company’s head office in Montreal, along with local and international members of the Student Conservation Association (SCA), will converge on Parc des Rapides in LaSalle for an intensive half-day of habitat restoration activities. This will include the removal of invasive plants, the planting of native species, and the preparing of mulch as protective ground cover. The volunteer day marks the kick-off of a partnership in which Domtar will provide support for the SCA’s urban initiatives designed to engage youth in local conservation projects in more than 20 major U.S. and Canadian cities.

With more than 225 bird species alone, the 30-hectare Parc des Rapides is a singular, world-class sanctuary emblematic of Quebec’s spectacular environment. Managed by Héritage Laurentien, it is home to Quebec’s largest heron colony, and hundreds of thousands of migratory birds pass through the park each year. It is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, such as bird watchers, hikers, cyclists, anglers, and paddlers.
Over the next twelve months, Domtar employees will be teaming up with young SCA conservationists to protect natural and cultural landmarks near Domtar facilities across North America. As participants develop community gardens, build hiking trails, and restore parklands, they will gain important green job skills and experience while strengthening their neighborhood’s natural environment.
The restoration activities are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
