BNY Mellon Awards $550,000 to Pittsburgh-area Nonprofits

PITTSBURGH, September 3, 2014 /3BL Media/ – BNY Mellon, a global leader in investment management and investment services, has awarded $550,000 in grants to eight Pittsburgh-area nonprofit organizations. The grants were approved during the BNY Mellon Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s summer meeting.

“Our philanthropic focus is on helping people in need by concentrating on basic needs and workforce development opportunities, and we are committed to investing in organizations that share our mission,” said James P. McDonald, BNY Mellon’s director of global philanthropy. “Our community partners provide critical services to the most vulnerable populations in the region and help strengthen our local communities.”

The grant recipients are: 

  • Community Human Services – $50,000 to provide emergency housing assistance to 40 families that are unable to be placed in traditional shelters;
  • Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF)– $60,000 that will allow HCEF to offer educational services to 1,250 children at homeless shelters in Allegheny County and support HCEF’s new Unaccompanied Youth Project, which will address the needs of youth under 25 who live on their own and lack a regular nighttime residence;
  • Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh – $100,000 that will allow United Jewish Federation to continue its support of the AgeWell Pittsburgh program for at-risk seniors and Squirrel Hill Food Pantry;
  • Pittsburgh Public Theater – $50,000 to underwrite the Theater’s education and outreach programs for the 2014-2015 season, including the Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest and Open Stage Student Matinee series;
  • Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh – $95,000 that will allow Rebuilding Together to provide repairs to at least 50 homes and support its project of renovating the homes of veterans.
