December 21, 2021 /3BL Media/ - If we’ve learnt anything this year, it’s that the world has started to care about ESG and sustainability. More than ever, people are taking note of corporate sustainability performance. As a result, the number of companies, consultants, and academics who are writing about the topic is proliferating accordingly. Small wonder then, that many sustainability practitioners feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information, let alone having the time to assess its quality.

PUBLIC BENEFIT RESEARCH PROJECT CURATES BEST SUSTAINABILITY RESOURCES

The Embedding Project is on a mission to help companies embed sustainability across their operations and decision-making. One crucial way is by reviewing new sustainability materials produced across the globe and curating the best practical guidance for corporate sustainability practitioners. The Embedding Project also develops guides and tools on topics where gaps exist in available guidance. These are the most-used ones:

THE RESOURCE WHEEL

Developed and refined over more than a decade of engagement with global companies across a range of industries, the Resource Wheel identifies the practices required for companies to embed sustainability across their organisations and decision-making. It curates the most relevant and practical resources available to help practitioners to take action on each of these core practices. Where there was limited relevant guidance, the Embedding Project conducted research and created its own guides for corporate practitioners.

THE GOALS DATABASE

The Credible Goals Database contains leading sustainability goals and commitments set by large companies globally. The project team has reviewed over 12,000 sustainability goals. And they actively monitor more than 1,200 companies. Every week, they assess new goals against a rigorous and transparent set of criteria.

To help improve company goal setting, the database includes a transparent assessment rubric. And it identifies the company information used to arrive at the assessment. You can search the goals in the database by issue, company, sector, trending topics, or the SDGs. You can also search based on the assessment criteria themselves.

THE POSITION DATABASE

To support companies developing strong, clear public position statements on sustainability issues, the project team has reviewed over 4,000 position statements from large global companies, and actively monitors more than 1,200 companies. Position statements are assessed against the project’s transparent rubric that points to best practice in writing a credible corporate position statement.

The Embedding Project is a global public-benefit research organisation that develops free, practical tools to help companies embed sustainability across their operations and decision-making. Using a rigorous approach and piloting each tool with our partner companies, we help companies reflect on their maturity, benchmark their strategies and commitments, and understand how to credibly contribute to environmental and social sustainability. Our work is made possible by contributions from our partners and funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
