January 28, 2015 /3BL Media/ - The Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) is pleased to welcome Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (Keurig), a leader in specialty coffee, coffee makers, teas, and other beverages, as its newest member.  With more than 400 beverage offerings from 60 brands, Keurig brings a unique perspective to BIER’s efforts to advance environmental sustainability within the beverage industry.

“We know that Keurig shares our commitment to and enthusiasm for environmental sustainability, and we are excited to have the organization contribute to BIER," says Tod Christenson, BIER Director.  “With its current specialization in the coffee and tea industry, and plans to expand into cold beverages this year, Keurig adds a new dimension to BIER.  The company’s leadership in water stewardship and responsible management across both manufacturing and agriculture supply chains will be a tremendous resource to help further our coalition’s work.”

“As the popularity of our products continues to grow and our product mix evolves, our membership with BIER allows us to learn from, collaborate on and contribute to best-in-class practices to achieve positive environmental change throughout our supply chain and across the beverage sector,” said Monique Oxender, Keurig’s Chief Sustainability Officer.  “Joining this collaboration of leading beverage companies exemplifies our value of partnering for mutual success and aligns with our priorities around water stewardship, recyclability, and supply chain resiliency.”

Recently published BIER work includes a set of guiding principles for ecosystem services, sector guidance to establish a common methodology for estimation, tracking and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and a quantitative benchmarking study that examines water and energy use drivers and impacts across more than 1,700 beverage production facilities.
