Lincoln Financial Foundation Awards More Than $155,000 In Education Grants to Concord, N.H. Nonprofits
More than $155,000 in Education Grants Awarded
Concord, N.H., June 24, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Lincoln Financial Foundation is helping to strengthen educational opportunity and reduce the dropout rate in New Hampshire through $155,378 in recent grants to 12 local nonprofit agencies that sustain learning. These grants are a portion of nearly $500,000 in charitable funds the foundation has allocated for New Hampshire in 2013.
The Lincoln Foundation awarded $50,000 over two years to City Year New Hampshire (CYNH) for its Whole School/Whole Child program, which provides one-on-one mentoring and tutoring, as well as small-group tutoring for at-risk high school students. Lincoln’s grant will support a team of corps members at Gossler Park Elementary school in Manchester. CYNH is an affordable, scalable, replicable and effective resource uniquely designed to help students and schools succeed while significantly reducing the dropout rate in Manchester.
As near-peers to students, corps members are uniquely positioned to help children succeed. As part of their activities, corps members lead whole school initiatives, such as morning greeting and attendance and behavior incentive programs, and after-school programming, such as Star Fish Corps and Math and Literacy Nights. These programs promote a positive school culture and learning environment. Each corps member is assigned to a classroom where they provide support to teacher-led instruction as well as mentoring and tutoring services to up to 10 students at a time who are falling behind, as determined by teachers and guidance staff.
Other education grants awarded include:
- $25,000 to Concord Boys & Girls Club for its education and enrichment rooms, which provide homework assistance and other academically-focused programming for children and youth.
- $15,000 to New Hampshire Public Broadcasting for its Ready to Learn family literacy program that reaches 18,000 children and distributes 10,000 free books to children in need, and the Kids Go! Writer’s Contest, which encourages New Hampshire children in grades K-3 to write and illustrate an original work .
- $10,000 to Concord Family YMCA for its Child Development Center, a New Hampshire Bureau of Childcare Licensing-certified License Plus childcare provider that focuses on the cognitive and physical development of preschoolers.
- $10,000 to University of New Hampshire Foundation to support the production phase of Fade to Black, a one-hour documentary exploring the recovered stories of African-American lives in New Hampshire.
- $8,000 to Child and Family Services of New Hampshire to provide summer scholarships to Camp Spaulding for children from low-income or immigrant families.
- $8,000 to the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire for Museum In Reach, a program that provides Head Start and low-income children with free, curriculum-based class visits to the museum.
- $6,378 to The Fells for the Out and About Preschool program, which provides multidisciplinary sessions in ecology and the natural environment for preschoolers in rural communities. This grant also provides funding for the exhibit John Hay and Abraham Lincoln: A Close and Unique Relationship focusing in Hay’s role as Abraham Lincoln’s personal secretary.
- $6,000 to the Circle Program for TAP (Teen Adventure Program), which provides mentoring to rural girls from low-income homes who are at risk of under-achieving and dropping out of school, and High School Circle Teen curriculum, providing user-friendly opportunities for job-shadowing, college and trade school visits and goal setting.
- $6,000 to Strawbery Banke for the History Within Reach program, aimed at children from underserved schools in the greater Concord area. The program supports state curriculum goals and blends hands-on history with science, literature, economics, mathematics, civics and social studies disciplines.
- $6,000 to YMCA of Greater Manchester for its Youth Opportunities Unlimited Dropout Prevention programs, which target elementary to high school students who are at risk of dropping out of school, significantly impacting the Hispanic, Asian and African-American communities.
- $5,000 to Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains for the Girls Rock the Capitol New Hampshire, which provides leadership development opportunities for 10 New Hampshire girls, instructing them in public policy, advocacy, political service and civic engagement. Each girl is paired with a female mentor who is a member of the New Hampshire Legislature.
