WASHINGTON, DC, Aug.21, 2013 /3BLMedia/ - Dr. Stephanie Bertels, Assistant Professor of Business at Simon Fraser University and a researcher with the Network for Business Sustainability (NBS), will present the organization’s new tool for driving employee engagement at the upcoming EHS Management Forum on Oct. 23-25 in Montreal, the National Association for Environmental Management (NAEM) announced today.  NBS is a Canada-based network of international academic experts and business leaders that produces research-based resources on important sustainability issues. NAEM is the largest professional community for environment, health and safety (EHS) and sustainability leaders.

Based on research from its network of corporate partners, NBS’s employee engagement tool takes a portfolio approach to embedding sustainability into a company’s culture. The tool helps organizations identify effective strategies in four key areas: fostering commitment, clarifying expectations, building momentum for change and instilling capacity for change.

Dr. Bertels said NBS’s research confirms that building a sustainable organization requires the commitment and talents of every member of an organization.

“Embedding sustainability into culture involves a portfolio of activities undertaken by a range of functions within the company. It means making this relevant for HR, for the strategy group, for operations and for your senior leadership,” she said.

NAEM Deputy Director Virginia Hoekenga said Dr. Bertel’s presentation resonates with the conference agenda’s strong emphasis on culture and engagement.

“One of our members’ primary roles is to be an advocate for safe, healthy, environmentally responsible and sustainable business operations,” she said. “We are pleased to showcase the NBS tool as a resource that can help attendees advance sustainability within their organizations.”
