The Engaged Volunteer: Appeal to self-interest?

Dec 13, 2010 2:00 PM ET

(3BLMedia/theCSRfood) December 13, 2010 - Many argue that volunteer rates are falling. They complain that people today won’t make commitments to a cause. But what makes a volunteer program successful? Is it participation rates? Is it long-term commitments? Is it the number of walls that were painted?

Volunteers also want to know what’s in it for them. Yep, it’s true. But self-interest isn’t the problem. It’s the solution.

Join us for a provocative session where we will explore how volunteers' "self-interest" is the solution to finding, keeping and managing volunteers. Together, we'll explore how to use this understanding to:

  • Create new definitions of success

  • Increase participation, enthusiasm, commitment and investment among participants and organizations

  • Develop leadership skills among participants

  • Learn how to create the kind of "space" where volunteers can experience transformation (and find out what this means)

  • Understand the 3 stages in the journey of a volunteer and how to design your program to meet people at their highest level of contribution
