AMD Corporate Responsibility Blog: From B-School to Big Business

(Justmeans.com / CSR News) - Siddharth Jain is a MBA student at Kelley school of Business at Indiana University. He is one of several MBA interns who joined AMD this summer in various functions. His internship is focused on a carbon footprint study.

As an MBA student, internship opportunities are a core component of my education. Earlier this year, I had to decide between two appealing internships - will it be mergers and acquisitions for a growing product development company or carbon footprint and sustainability in the semiconductor space?

I chose to join AMD this June to develop a carbon footprint study.  I made this choice for several reasons. First, I am committed to the cause of protecting our precious planet.  I believe that business plays a significant role in this cause and I leapt at a chance to be part of this movement.  Second, AMD is an amazing company.  They have an exciting new business strategy and cool products that power our digital lives.  Third, I learned early-on that this is a company of caring people.  I know that in this culture, I will be supported and free to explore ideas and innovation.

It’s unbelievable how fast things have happened in the past four weeks. The internship program is extremely well structured and laid out. From strategic projects to roundtables, interaction with senior leaders, the AMD talent team is serious about growing the future business leadership pipeline. In our first month, the intern group has met with C level executives like Chief Marketing Officer Nigel Dessau, Chief Strategy Officer Marty Seyer and a host of other senior executives. We all have substantive and strategic projects that are also challenging – no one is bored!

As part of the Corporate Responsibility group, I am working on a carbon footprint project that is jointly sponsored by AMD’s Product Marketing Group.  By the end of my 10 weeks here, I will deliver a white paper, a carbon footprint assessment tool and a presentation to executives on my results.  Although I am incredibly busy, it is great to be learning so much and delivering products that will benefit AMD and inform environmentally conscious customers.

I am also learning about organizations.  The culture of AMD is extremely collaborative and supportive.  These people really “walk the talk.”   The Gold LEED® certified campus here in Austin, houses more than 2,500 people who willingly go an extra mile to help you. For instance, the Director of Field Assistant Engineers has worked around his busy schedule to help me understand the highly technical processor designs, even though he is not even directly involved in my project. In this one month, I have met more than fifteen executives, engineers, suppliers, paralegal specialists for my project and not once have I faced difficulties in getting assistance or help. From my perspective as a summer intern, this speaks volumes about AMD.

As I immerse myself in completing my project during the next few weeks, I am excited about the impact it will have on the sustainability goals of AMD.  Adding to this, I have gained a huge amount of knowledge and experience in this exciting and important field.   I couldn’t have asked for more!
