BMW Launches New Electric Car; UPS Earns Highest Score from Carbon Disclosure Project; Rice University Starts New Energy and Environment Initiative - Energy Minute for September 28, 2012
BMW will show off its electric i3 Concept car at the Paris Motor Show, which opens today. The vehicle is powered by a 125-kilowatt electric motor and integrates sustainability with luxury, using renewable raw materials such as wood from sustainably managed forests and leather made with olive tree extract as a tanning agent. The car goes into production next year.
UPS has earned the highest score in the 2012 Carbon Disclosure Project’s “Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index” of S&P companies, receiving a 99 out of a possible 100. UPS is one of only two U.S. companies to achieve the high score, and the only company from the S&P Industrials sector to receive the highest score. CDP scores companies on their internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company.
Rice University has announced the Energy and Environment Initiative, E21, a plan for interdisciplinary research to overcome barriers to the sustainable development and use of current and alternative forms of energy. E21 researchers will study energy policy and markets, finance and management, as well as cultural and societal values that drive the public discussion of issues about energy and the environment.
