Coca-Cola Enterprises Launches New Recycling Initiatives; Statue of Liberty Concession Wins Sustainability Award; Walmart Links Buyers’ Compensation to Sustainability Goals - CSR Minute for October 11, 2012
Coca-Cola Enterprises has launched two new initiatives aimed at improving recycling behavior and infrastructure as the company works toward its goal of becoming a low-carbon, zero-waste business. CCE is setting up a joint venture with PET reycler APPE in France to boost the capacity of its plastic reprocessing facility by 70 percent. The company is also funding a research partnership to examine how consumer behavior change strategies can improve at-home recycling rates in Great Britain and France. Only one half of plastic bottles are collected for recycling in these countries.
Evelyn Hill, the food concession operator at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Immigration Museum, has been awarded a National Restaurant Association “Operator Innovations Award” for its sustainability program. The concession on the islands recycled 94 percent of its total waste, helped by Orwak compactor/balers from TOMRA Compaction, a company that offers solutions for solid waste material disposal.
Walmart has installed a sustainability filter in its merchants’ performance reviews, which help determine pay raises and potential for future promotion. The merchants are high-level managers responsible for multi-billion dollar buying decisions. The change is part of the company’s efforts to build a seamless sustainability supply chain with its 100,000 suppliers to improve their environmental performance.
