Social Responsibility: Providing Better Future for Children in the Quake Area

Completion of Manpower Ningqiang Elementary School

    28 October 2009 [Shanghai, China]

Today, the children who lost their school in Juting Village, Ningqiang County, Shaanxi Province due to Sichuan earthquake last year walked into their new dream school. Today, the new elementary school was inaugurated and commenced officially its educational activities. The reconstruction of the school was sponsored by Manpower, the world leader in the employment industry, and is the first school ever built by a foreign employment agency in China after the earthquake. The new school building is able to resist an earthquake measuring 8 points on the Richter scale.

The inauguration ceremony of the new school was attended by Julianna Zhu – Human Resources Director of Manpower China, Fumio Kohno – Vice President and Financial Director of Manpower Japan, and representatives from Shaanxi Province Human Resource and Social Security Department, Association of Human Resources Service Industry of Shanghai, Hanzhong City Personnel Bureau, and Ningqiang County Government officer.

Located only three meters from the Baoji-Chengdu Railway, the old Juting Central Elementary was completely destroyed in the Sichuan earthquake last year. The 3-storey school building was leveled, destroying 156 students’ hopes of having better education. After learning of this, Manpower China sent its employees to investigate further, before deciding to combine its corporate social responsibility initiative in making a positive difference in the community with its expertise in talent development. Manpower donated RMB2 million ($294, 000) to sponsor the construction of a new elementary school building.

“As a global company that provides work opportunities, and training and development programs, Manpower’s service per se is socially responsible because we help people find jobs.” Danny Yuan, Managing Director of Manpower China said, “Manpower receives tremendous support from the Chinese community. When we learned of this disaster, our conscience told us that we needed to reach out to them. Thus, we decided to help the reconstruction of the school, improving the education environment for the students in this quake-stricken area, and committed to supporting the development of this project in a long-term and sustainable manner.”

Employees of Manpower operations in China, Japan, Korea and other countries participated in this initiative voluntarily. Their help lit the candle of hope for these unfortunate children. The new school now stands at a new location in Daijiaba Village, Ningqiang County, and consists of the school building, food hall, dormitory and other facilities. The school can hold up to 350 students and nine classes. Now, all temporary classes in Jutinggou have been cancelled and relocated to the new school.

Our view is while many companies donate money in response to disaster, we need to look long-term. The loss of a school can be a devastating blow to a community as it could be the only school for miles around. The reconstruction of the school is the first step on the road to helping these children achieve the education they need to succeed in the world of work.
