Google Invests in Wind Energy; Progress Energy Teams Up with Transcanada on New Pipeline; Chrysler’s Fiat 500e EPA Top-rated at 108MPGe; NativeEnergy Sells Offsets to The Clymb - Energy Minute for January 16, 2013
Google has invested $200 million in the Spinning Spur Wind Project in the Texas Panhandle as part of the company’s strategic plan to invest in renewable energy. The Spinning Spur wind farm delivers power to Southwestern Public Service. EDF Renewable Energy built the project and remains a co-owner and the manager. The 161- megawatt wind facility, located about 35 miles from Amarillo, generates enough electricity to power 60,000 homes. The Texas Panhandle is a major source of renewable energy in the state as the West Texas winds churn massive turbines. Google has made 11 renewable energy investments since 2012.
Progress Energy has awarded a $5 billion natural gas infrastructure project across northern British Columbia to TransCanada. TransCanada will design, build, own and operate the proposed Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline that will carry gas from the North Montney region in northeastern British Columbia to a proposed export facility near Prince Rupert, B.C. Progress plans to export liquefied natural gas from the port to markets in Asia. Progress was recently acquired by Malaysia’s state-owned energy company.
Chrysler’s Fiat 500e, an electric vehicle, has been rated by the EPA at 108 MPGe, the highest rating of any EV. MPGe is the EPA’s measure for determining how many miles an EV can travel on electricity that has the same content as a gallon of gasoline. The EPA also reports that the car will travel 87 miles on one charge, which is best in its class, and that the annual cost to power the EV is about $500. The battery-electric Fiat 500e is a zero-emissions vehicle. It goes on in California in the second quarter of this year.
The Clymb, a flash sale e-tailer that ships thousands of packages daily, is partnering with NativeEnergy to offset the CO2 produced by those shipments. The purchase will help fund the Indiana School Wind Project, a trio of wind turbines serving that state’s school districts. NativeEnergy’s “Help Build” carbon offsets help fund new carbon reduction projects including wind, farm methane, solar, biomass, and landfill gas.
