ABOUT Harrah's Entertainment

As the world's largest provider of casino entertainment, Harrah's Entertainment is aggressively and creatively addressing its environmental challenges and responsibilities. CodeGreen, Harrah's comprehensive environmental program, focuses on critical issues of energy, waste, water, and carbon emissions. Harrah's is committed to finding sustainable solutions for our products, equipment, and facilities.Harrah's leadership in environmental stewardship is but one reflection of our historical industry leadership in innovation and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Environmental stewardship is in fact a key component of Harrah's Code of Commitment, the social responsibility standards that govern how we conduct business, and that guide our relationships with our customers, our employees, and our home communities. Other aspects of our CSR programs include: philanthropy, volunteerism, community relations, diversity inclusion and responsible gaming. For additional information on these components, please visit, http://www.harrahs.com/harrahs-corporate/about-us.html

CodeGreen's foundation is the enthusiasm of our employees and the interest of our customers in Harrah's being good environmental stewards. CodeGreen teams at each Harrah's property work hard to reduce natural resource use, conserve energy, and promote reuse and recycling. Several recent accomplishments demonstrate how sustainability is deeply woven into Harrah's business model and corporate ethics. In 2008, Harrah's became the first casino company to both join Climate Leaders, EPA's partnership with leading firms committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and win a regional EPA Environmental Quality Award. In 2008, Harrah's also partnered with NativeEnergy to reduce the World Series of Poker's carbon footprint.

But our commitment to sustainability is nothing new. Over the last five years, 74 energy conservation projects, including one of the world's cleanest co-generation units, have reduced Harrah's carbon emissions by the equivalent of 164,440 barrels of oil. Our conservation projects have been good for the environment, and smart for our business.

(Justmeans.com / CSR News) - Harrah's has continued to achieve major reductions in energy and water use since Earth Day 2008, winning a prestigious EPA Region Nine Award

LAS VEGAS - April 22, 2009 - Harrah's Entertainment celebrates Earth Day 2009 with a broad range of sustainability achievements, and the development of a company-wide set of industry best practices and goals known as CodeGreen. CodeGreen aims to take the best innovations that emerge from employee teams at individual properties, and to systematize them enterprise-wide.

At the core of CodeGreen's strategy is an ambitious 18-month calendar of initiatives that aims to develop employee driven grassroots programs around a comprehensive approach, one that aims to dramatically reduce energy consumption, improve solid waste and recycling programs through good procurement practices, create a more sustainable supply chain, increase renewable energy supply, reduce carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions, and build strong partnerships with the EPA, carbon offset supplier Native Energy, and key nonprofit groups.

A handful of notable Harrah's CodeGreen achievements include:

  • A 2008 EPA Region Two Environmental Quality Award, the highest public recognition the EPA presents;
  • Leading the charge in "powering down" the world famous Las Vegas Strip for World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour on March 28th.  Every Harrah's Entertainment resort in Las Vegas participated as did 19 other Harrah's casino resorts across the country.
  • 100 "Green H.E.R.O." employees throughout Nevada walked neighborhoods passing out 75,000 compact fluorescent bulbs to help residents become more energy efficient (light bulbs donated by Nevada Energy).
  • Las Vegas resorts and the Harrah's Foundation provided more than $700,000 in funding to upgrade the Teacher EXCHANGE, a re-use resource center where Clark County public school teachers can obtain slightly used computers, office furniture, and supplies.
  • Employees from Harrah's and Horseshoe Council Bluffs, Iowa, donated trees.  In the last ten years more than 10,000 trees have been distributed to neighbors.

Las Vegas has a long way to go before being considered "green" but Harrah's is making a good start.
