Conference to drive discussion on the future of ethical certifications, eco-labeling and sustainable sourcing

(Justmeans.com) May 23, 2011 – New York, NY – Justmeans is excited to announce the participation of Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) at the Certification Consumption and Change Conference on May 24 in Washington D.C., an event that will bring together thought leaders from ethical certifications, leading brands, and government agencies to discuss the future of ethical certification. SFI is a sponsor of the Conference and Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI, will be presenting on SFI’s “bigger picture” approach to certification standards, including conservation, integrity and community.

SFI President and CEO Kathy Abusow works with landowners, researchers, forest product manufacturers, buyers, government agencies and conservation groups to promote awareness of forest certification along the entire supply chain. Before joining SFI Inc. in 2007, Abusow managed a forest certification and market acceptance consultancy, and is internationally respected for her technical expertise on national and global forest certification standards. She also conducted research for consumer advocacy projects on environmental labels in the marketplace and their adherence to internationally accepted norms for environmental labels and declarations. Abusow earned an undergraduate degree from McGill University and an M.A. from Harvard University with a concentration in sustainable development of natural resources.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) is an independent non-profit organization, and is solely responsible for maintaining, overseeing and improving the internationally recognized SFI program (www.sfiprogram.org). More than 180 million acres are certified to the SFI forest management standard across the United States and Canada, making it the largest single forest standard in the world. SFI chain-of-custody certification tells buyers the percentage of fiber from certified forests, certified sourcing and/or post-consumer recycled content. The SFI program’s unique fiber sourcing requirements promote responsible forest management on all suppliers’ lands. SFI Inc. is governed by a three-chamber board of directors representing environmental, social and economic sectors equally.

The Certification, Consumption and Change Conference will take place May 24th at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The conference will bring together representatives from top brands that source certified ingredients and eco-label their products, leading ethical certifiers, government agencies and NGOs, and the service providers that make reporting and compliance possible.
