MLB Talks Sustainability at the White House; Dell Reduces Packaging; Kmart Marks 30 Years with March of Dimes - CSR Minute for July 23, 2012

Jul 23, 2012 3:05 PM EDT

Representatives from Major League Baseball joined in a “Sports and Sustainability” discussion at the White House. The event focused on the economic and environmental benefits of greening the sports industry. MLB began an alliance with the Natural Resources Defense Council in 2006 to identify and promote better environmental practices.

Dell has reported major progress toward its environmental goals in its packaging practices. In 2012, the company had achieved a reduction in the size of packaging by more than 12 percent, an increase in the amount of recycled and renewable content in packaging by 40 percent, and made it possible for 75 percent of packaging to be recyclable at curbside. These improvements have eliminated more than 20 million pounds of packaging material since 2008.

Kmart has been recognized by the March of Dimes as its longest-tenured corporate supporter, having made contributions over 30 years that total $106 million. The charity has established a $1 million grant in the company’s name to support research into premature birth.
