As hundreds of delegates from around the world fly into London on September 29th for the First International Conference on Ethical Certification, many will be concerned about the carbon footprint of such an event. For this reason, event organizers at InSource have teamed up with Carbonfund.org to mitigate the environmental impact of this important conference entitled Certification, Consumption and Change (CC&C).

Offsetting the adverse climate impact of traveling to conferences is a growing trend, especially for green conferences. The Copenhagen climate talks were estimated to have created 46,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The CC&C conference will be a carbon-neutral event through Carbonfund.org’s offsetting program. Supporting forest-based projects combats climate change while restoring habitats and preserving biodiversity. Carbonfund.org invests in several projects around the world from forest conservation in the Amazon to the Nez Perce Reforestation Project in the United States.

Such carbon offsetting efforts will complement the event’s focus on responsible forest management. This focus will be spearheaded by a fifteen-member delegation from the Forest Stewardship Council as well as representatives from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and PEFC UK.  The focus on sustainable forestry will also be complemented by the presence of Cargill, Nestle and Unilever who are working on a sustainable palm oil sourcing program to preserve rainforest habitats. Together with Carbonfund.org, Certification Consumption and Change will foster a discussion which will define the future of this important field while remaining true to a core value of sustainability.
