NHL Offsets Power Usage in Stanley Cup Playoffs; Alcoa Links Pay to Sustainability Performance; Eastman Chemical Wins Energy Efficiency Awards - CSR Minute for May 21, 2012
The NHL has teamed up with Sterling Planet, a provider of environmental assets, to mitigate the environmental impact of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sterling Planet will provide the NHL with 9.8 million kilowatt-hours from U.S. wind projects, and 97 metric tons of verified emission reductions to offset the power used in the playoffs. 100 percent of the NHL’s estimated 2012 electricity usage at its New York City headquarters, estimated at 1.5 million kilowatt hours, will also be offset through this initiative.
Alcoa has published its 11th annual Sustainability Report. The report uses a Sustainability Scorecard to align sustainability targets with business strategy and provide a dashboard to measure progress against key sustainability metrics. For 2011, Alcoa linked 20 percent of variable compensation to achieving significant aspects of the company’s sustainability goals.
For the 19th consecutive year, Eastman Chemical Company has awards for implementing energy-efficient improvements from the American Chemistry Council. Eastman earned eight of the 67 awards presented for outstanding projects, including an Exceptional Merit award. Combined, Eastman’s winning projects save over 737,000 million BTUs and 337 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
