Pearson Launches Community Awards; Zurich Insurance Volunteers Feed Children; New Monitoring Program Tracks Alberta Oil Sands Sustainability - CSR Minute for June 8, 2012
Pearson has launched its annual Pearson Community Awards program for 2012. The initiative recognizes the company’s volunteer efforts with cash awards to employees and a contribution to their chosen charity. This year’s PCA recipients will be announced in the fall.
A new program can track trends to indicate whether the oil sands industry in Alberta is sustainable. Craig Hebert, who works at the National Wildlife Research Center, said the program is designed to deliver accurate measurements of the environmental impacts of oil sands operations through monitoring of air, water, and wildlife. The $50 million a year program will make its data available to the public.
Forty members from Zurich’s Operations Leadership team volunteered at Feed My Starving Children, an organization that provides meals to starving children around the world. In one day, the team packed boxes containing 18,792 meals, enough to feed 51 children in the Philippines for a year. In addition, a Zurich donation of $1,500 provided another 6,818 meals. Zurich is a commercial property-casualty insurance provider.
