Protecting Pakistan Crops with Innovation
Dates, a palm fruit, face an acute challenge against natural disasters in Pakistan. Pakistan is the fourth largest date producer in the world. Traditionally, the trees are covered with date leaf mats to save them from rain during the monsoon season that coincides with the ripening season. Rain damages 70% of the crops, which threatens the livelihood of local farming communities.
Addressing these concerns, DuPont™ Tyvek® paper, a water-resistant and lightweight barrier, helps date crops to ripen. Protecting against rain and dust storms, Tyvek® paper allows ventilation by absorbing heat and providing uniform maturity. The results are early ripening with improved size and quality, enabling farmers to reap good profits.
“We are capitalizing on growth opportunities in Pakistan by sharply focusing on innovation pipelines that address the increasing demand for food productivity megatrend,” said Kashif Karim, business development manager, DuPont Protection Technologies. “We are committed to meeting local needs to be closer to our customers.”
In 2009, the Pakistani governmental institutions supported the introduction of Tyvek® paper. Today, Tyvek® plays a key role in contributing to the economic development of the country by supplying 350,000 bags for dates. In addition, DuPont supports research efforts in collaboration with one of the leading universities in Pakistan, Shah Abdul Lateef Bhitai University, and the Date Palm Research Institute in Khairpur. The research will include tests on increased production of varieties, as well as size and quality improvement and the impact on environment.
