Spotlight on CSC's CR Report: Our Community Investment
December 12, 2011 - From the United States to India, and from Lithuania to South Africa, our employees seek to transform our world through small acts that add up to large, positive changes in the communities where we live and work. We envision progress on a global scale, then invest time and energy in our own neighborhoods to make it real. Whether it’s expanding access to education, providing for a healthier environment, promoting child welfare or supporting wounded warriors and people with disabilities, the work we do in the places most familiar to us has the power to radiate far and wide.
CSC's community engagement program, called CSC Gives Back, has for years ensured that our global capabilities were applied for local good. This year we launched our Global CSC Gives Back Challenge, in partnership with Child Fund International. In addition, we are applying our skills for the good of nonprofits through our partnership with NPower's Community Corps.
Regionally, we have seen great progress through a variety of initiatives, including:
- Becoming the first corporate sponsor of Community in Action (CiA), a Rio de Janeiro–based non-governmental organization (NGO) that offers vocational, cultural and personal development programs for all ages. CiA is located in the Complexo do Alemão,one of Rio’s largest favelas with more than 100,000 residents. A CSC contribution helped CiA fund operations and educational offerings. And with our consulting support, CiA developed a new business model for 2012 that will enable it to place social entrepreneurs in other community organizations and increase its scope.
- Our team members in India reaching out in many ways to assist people with disabilities: by providing scholarships and study aids and recorded books for visually impaired children and adults; sponsoring state-level sports competitions for children with disabilities; donating an art center, orchestra and recording set to a school for the disabled; and supplying medical equipment to the Free Artificial Limb Centre at the Hindu Mission Hospital.
- Collaborating with Bender Consulting Services, Inc., to provide learning programs, career opportunities and other support for people with disabilities. One example is our work with the Bender Leadership Academy, an outreach effort designed to help Delaware high school students hone leadership skills and prepare for careers in technology. CSC employees help organize Academy classes, and this year, we hosted the 10th Annual Leadership Academy Graduation ceremony, where our executives were among the speakers. Our Disability Mentoring Day event included opportunities for students to shadow CSC employees on the job.
- Understanding that the families of injured service members need a welcoming place to stay when their loved ones are receiving treatment for injuries. To provide that home away from home free of charge, we partnered with CharityWorks to raise $450,000 to help fund construction of one of the largest-ever Fisher Houses for veterans’ families, on the grounds of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, DC.
