(Justmeans.com / CSR News) - SPREAD THE WORD: An application on Facebook earned a one-can donation of Campbell's soup for every "friend" who joined the cause. The app resulted in 32,000 pounds of food donated to Stamp Out Hunger and generated awareness for this year's record-breaking drive.

The inventories on shelves of food banks and feeding programs across the country are now fuller, thanks to thousands of generous Americans who donated a record 77 million pounds of food during the annual Campbell-supported Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 8.

With the increased need came a 3.7-million-pound increase in donations versus 2009.

"This year marked an incredibly impressive feat, with the drive's total over its 18-year history surpassing one billion pounds of food collected," said John Faulkner, Director-Brand Communications. "But success goes beyond the numbers. It is the knowledge that we have helped the 49 million Americans at risk for hunger."

Stamp Out Hunger, the nation's largest single-day food drive, is run in partnership with the National Association of Letter Carriers.

To participate, individuals fill a bag with nonperishable food and leave it at their mailbox before their regular mail delivery.

The nation's 230,000 letter carriers then do the rest, picking up the donations and delivering them to food banks and feeding programs in their local communities.

Campbell supports the effort through the mailing of 120 million direct-mail reminder postcards and a public relations campaign that includes social media components such as Facebook and Twitter and television and radio public service announcements.

Campbell also kicks off the drive each year with a 1-million-pound food donation to Feeding America, one of the beneficiary agencies of the program.

Through its “Nourishing” corporate social responsibility program, Campbell has been widely recognized for making a positive impact in the workplace, in the marketplace and in the communities in which it operates. The company has been added to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, named to the 100 Best Corporate Citizens List by Corporate Responsibility magazine, named to the list of 2010 World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere magazine and named a Catalyst Award Winner in 2010. Campbell recently published its 2010 Corporate Social Responsibility report, which describes the company’s strategies, policies and programs that will help drive the company toward four comprehensive goals by 2020.
