New report highlights Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ commitment to ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship and community involvement

    What:

Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) is engaging directly with customers with the launch of their new Global Responsibility (GR) Annual Report. The fiscal 2008 report takes a new approach to corporate social responsibility reporting by integrating engaging, customer friendly content into the Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ website. Visitors to the site can find and interact with sections of the report that are important to them and share parts of the report with friends via social networks like Digg or Facebook.

WHEN:     Wednesday, April 22, 2009 (Earth Day)

    WHERE:

The interactive website is available at www.starbucks.com/sharedplanet. Features of the site include:

    • An interactive coffee map that lets customers see how Starbucks is not just a presence in their community, but also see the positive impact Starbucks is having in communities where their coffee is grown.

    • mug pledge that gives Starbucks customers the opportunity to officially pledge to bring in a reusable mug or tumbler for their beverages. This reduces their drink price by 10 cents in the U.S. and Canada and also helps them reduce their environmental footprint. In fiscal 2008, Starbucks customers used reusable mugs 22 million times, a savings of about one million pounds of paper. In honor of Earth Day, Starbucks stores in Canada and at Target locations in the U.S. are offering complimentary brewed coffee when customers bring in a reusable mug or tumbler. Starbucks company-operated stores in the U.S. will offer 10 cents off a customer’s beverage when they bring in a reusable mug or tumbler as they do every day.

    • customizable report feature that enables customers to tailor their own report and download a printout based on specific areas of interest.

    • virtual tour of Starbucks newest LEED® certified store that highlights the green elements that will become incorporated into the design of all new company-owned stores.

In 2008 Starbucks continued to make substantial progress towards its long-term Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ goals. Highlights from the 2008 report include:

    • Ethical Sourcing – Seventy-seven percent of the 385 million pounds of coffee Starbucks bought in 2008 was responsibly grown and ethically traded. Starbucks renewed its five-year partnership with Conservation International with a three-year commitment for $7.5 million to pro-actively affect climate change by offering farmers incentives to prevent deforestation.

    • Environmental Stewardship – All new company-owned stores will be LEED® certified by 2010. Starbucks recently opened its newest LEED® certified store near the company’s first store at Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

    • Community Involvement – Starbucks tracked 246,000 hours of community service in fiscal 2008 by partners (employees) and customers. Many of them used V2V, Starbucks online social network that helps connect volunteers all over the world. Starbucks also made 64 grants totaling $2.1 million to organizations supporting young people in fiscal 2008.
