Vancouver, CANADA – Often the biggest innovations come from unexpected sources. Suncor Energy, developer of the Athabasca oil sands, is not only a global leader in fossil fuel exploration, refining and development, but also at the vanguard of developing renewable energy resources in Canada.

Leading the company as it expands its renewable energies is newly named President Steve Williams who will join the GLOBE 2012 Opening Plenary on Innovation and its Role in Driving Sustainability, March 14th, 2012 in Vancouver. Williams’ 35 years of experience in the international energy industry and record of environmental leadership will give attendees a unique perspective on the worldwide transition to a greener economy.

Currently, Suncor has six wind farms in operation with a generating capacity substantial enough to power 100,000 Canadian homes, and more wind farms in development. In December, Suncor was honoured with “The Fuel Change Award 2011” for its pioneering work in the development and commercialization of biofuels at the 8th Annual Canadian Renewable Fuels Summit in Calgary. Meanwhile, it continues to confront the environmental issues associated with oil sands.

About Steve Williams:

Williams joined Suncor in May 2002, when he was appointed Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and Chief Financial Officer. He has also served as Executive Vice President, Oil Sands and as Suncor’s Chief Operating Officer since 2007. He was appointed President and a member of the Board of Directors on December 1, 2011. Williams is a fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers and a member of the Institute of Directors. He is also co-chair of the Oil Sands Leadership Initiative (OSLI); part of the CEO Committee of Syncrude Canada Limited; a member of the Business Advisory Council, School of Business at the University of Alberta; and a member of the Alberta Government Oil and Gas Economics Advisory Council. He holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Exeter University and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School as well as Oxford University’s Business Economics Program.
