Symantec Celebrates International Women's Day

(Justmeans.com / CSR News) - On March 8th, nations around the world celebrated International Women’s Day, a global event recognizing the economic, political, and social achievements of women past, present, and future.

To commemorate this year’s celebration of women, Symantec is sponsoring the UN Global Compact’s and UNIFEM’s Equality Means Business event on March 9th. In addition to honoring International Women’s Day, the event will launch the Women’s Empowerment Principles and explore their practical relevance for business. Symantec’s Corporate Responsibility Director Cecily Joseph will be in attendance at the event.

Improving opportunities for women at Symantec

In October 2007, Symantec adopted the Calvert Women’s Principles™ as part of its Diversity & Inclusion initiatives. The Principles are the first global code of corporate conduct focused exclusively on women’s issues.

Symantec has also forged relationships with a number of organizations focused on women in the technology sector, including Catalyst, Women in Technology International, Society of Women Engineers, Anita Borg Institute for Women & Technology, and Women’s International Networking.

Improving opportunities for women around the globe

In addition to focusing on women at Symantec, the company strives to contribute to the health, safety, and development of women around the world. The company’s philanthropic activities include projects such as:

  • Working with Global Fund for Women to provide microenterprise loans to women in India and China wanting to start their own businesses
  • Partnering with CARE to fund a project in India focused on ensuring young girls have access to school
  • Providing four-year scholarships, via the Pune-based Lila Poonawalla Foundation, to low-income girls in order that they might study engineering
  • Executing many community-based projects designed to expose young girls and women to the various career options available in the technology sector
