ABOUT The North Face
We are named for the coldest, most unforgiving side of a mountain. We have helped explorers reach the most unfathomable heights of the Himalayas. But The North Face(R)legend begins, ironically, on a beach. More precisely, San Franciscos North Beach neighborhood, at an altitude of only 150 feet above sea level. It was here in 1966 that two hiking enthusiasts resolved to follow their passions and founded a small mountaineering retail store.
Soon thereafter, that little shop became known as The North Face, a retailer of high-performance climbing and backpacking equipment. In 1968, The North Face moved to the other side of San Francisco Bay, to the unbridled possibilities of the Berkeley area, and began designing and manufacturing its own brand of technical mountaineering apparel and equipment.
In hopes of sharing our passion for the outdoors, we created a number of global events and initiatives to inspire the next generation of explorers and conservationists.
The North Face Awards Satellite Boardshop the Inaugural Snowsport Never Stop Exploring Award
February 1, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Thursday at Snowsports Industries America (SIA) in Denver, The North Face named Boulder-based Satellite Boardshop the winner of the Never Stop Exploring Award, recognizing the specialty snowsport store that demonstrates the most complete dedication to encouraging and enabling outdoor exploration within the community. Satellite was selected for its unwavering commitment and fresh approach to growing board sport participation in Boulder and beyond.
“To the team at Satellite, board sports are a way of life. It is a way to explore the outdoors, from back alleys to back bowls, that they passionately share with their customers through firsthand knowledge and community based events,” said Jeff Brusven, National Sales Manager for The North Face. “Through relationships forged with core brands, community groups and the greater snowboard community, Satellite’s influence can be felt well beyond the retail walls.”
In 2005, Satellite took a leading role in the skate community when they founded their Ride With Us Tour – a season long tour of the region’s skate parks and urban features with an open invite to public to “Ride with Us”. Last season, Satellite launched the first ever winter version of the Ride With Us Tour, incorporating new resort partnerships and culminating in their signature Love Games in April. The Love Games have revived some of the Colorado’s legendary backcountry freestyle features atop Loveland Pass and is quickly gaining recognition as one of the most progressive events in snowboarding.
Additionally, Satellite is working to get more people out riding by partnering with local resorts and community groups like The University of Colorado Snowboard Club and Snowboard Colorado, and offering the opportunity for the public to ride with many of their local icons of the sport. Most recently, Satellite pioneered the demo days “corral”–a small fenced in area near the base specially built with small rails, jumps, and “learn to ride” zones for pint size snowboarders.
The Never Stop Exploring Award was initially developed in 2010 to recognize specialty running retailers that demonstrate the most complete dedication to encouraging and enabling Outdoor Exploration. This award to Satellite Boardshop is the first time the grant has been awarded to a specialty snowsport retailer. In 2012 The North Face expanded the award to recognize specialty outdoor (Outdoor Retailer Summer Market), bike (Interbike), running (The Running Event) and winter sports (SIA) retailers who share the brand’s goal to inspire a global movement of Outdoor Exploration.
